Caring for the elderly

Writer's picture: QuitaQuita

Have you inherited the responsibility of taking care of your parent? I have and let me tell you it is not for the weak. I once was diagnosed with caregiver burnout, in addition to being newly married and dealing with my own new life that was reinvited, but your parent is your parent, they are the ones who made it possible for your lifeline to begin, you are who you are because they planted the seed in which to help you bloom and grow in the garden of life. It's only right and respectable to return the favor.

Most importantly they would do it for you over and over again till it was not in their power.

Here are some helpful tools for you. Want to chat about my experience Message me directly...

Helping an elderly parent can be approached in several thoughtful and practical ways. Here are some steps you can consider:

  1. Assess Their Needs: Determine how much help your parent requires with daily activities. Consider areas such as family support, home safety, medical needs, cognitive health, mobility, and personal hygiene1.

  2. Empathize: Understand that aging can be challenging due to various losses. Be empathetic towards their feelings and frustrations2.

  3. Regular Communication: Stay in touch regularly. This can be as simple as a phone call to check on their well-being2.

  4. Involve Other Family Members: Share the responsibility with siblings or other family members. Keep everyone updated on your parent’s condition and needs2.

  5. Identify Potential Problems: Look for any safety hazards in their home and make necessary repairs or adjustments2.

  6. Advocate for Their Health: Be informed about their medical conditions and treatments. Accompany them to doctor’s appointments if possible2.

  7. Encourage Activity: Help them stay socially and physically active to prevent isolation2.

Remember, every situation is unique, so tailor your approach to fit your parent’s specific circumstances and preferences. It’s also important to take care of yourself during this process, as caregiving can be demanding. Don’t hesitate to seek support from caregiver groups or professional services if needed.
